Name: Claire Lyon
Location: Doncaster, South Yorkshire
Life: Partner; Andy/ Son; Ruben
How often do you work?
I can plan when I run my programme of sessions and events and I love having that control. I’ve got the flexibility to plan around my own family commitment and I really value being able to prioritise this. I do have a great helper, my 3 year old loves what we do and it’s great to be able to include Ruben in some of my classes if I want to.
How does the job fit around your family life?
Running my own business, I work every day on marketing, prep and admin, but out and about sharing the sparkle around 2 -3 days a week.
How much time do you commit?
I think when you run your own business you do think about it a lot! However I love my glittery inspirational world, so I have to say I am always seeing opportunities to develop and grow my business. I keep a notebook and write my ideas down. I am able to choose my hours so I work approx. 30 hours a week and that’s based around my own family commitments.
Where do you carry out your work?
I typically work in partnership with other family friendly organisations so that the families who come along can join in a welcoming and friendly environment, enjoy free parking and stay for a coffee and cake if they want to.
Do you need a car?
Yes, it doesn’t need to be very big, but we couldn’t sprinkle the inspiration around Doncaster if not!
Do you get support/training?
Our Creative Hub Head office team are great at this and are just at the end of the phone line. Plus we have a fab network and support is just a message or post away. You can ask any question, and someone will be able to help you. I love that about our network, there’s lots of really supportive like minded people.
Would you recommend this opportunity to others?
Absolutely. For me, I wanted a business that was flexible and had scope to could grow as I had more time available and its given me what I need. I guess its always down to the individual person and looking at what they enjoy and what they want to achieve. Running your own business is not for everyone, as it hard work, but you get out of it what you put in. I love having goals and dreaming BIG.
Do you advertise?
I mainly share stories and what people are saying about Creation Station because the children and mummies love what we do. So I use social media mainly, but our events are great at letting people know about our fun and educational art and crafts classes parties and clubs.
Are there any downsides to the role?
You make the business yours so if you see a downside you need to work on ways to change it or find someone to support you in that area. Packing the car in the rain is not a great but the smiley faces make up for wet hair!
