Woodovis Park

Woodovis Park in Gulworthy, Devon is surrounded by stunning countryside and close to Tavistock and Dartmoor. The award winning 5 star holiday park is ideal for families with plenty to do and see in the area.

As you enter the park you cannot help but notice the peace and tranquillity. Hidden down a short lane lined with plant pots, Woodovis offers a mix of touring and camping pitches, luxury caravans and Glamping Pods and even a cottage for hire.

The sites reception is held in a building that also holds a small store. You can check in between 4pm and 6pm and if you are to arrive later this can be arranged with prior notice. You can even book freshly baked bread and croissants for collection in the morning for your breakfast. We were in a Super Finch Caravan for our stay, the warden took us up to the caravan and showed us where everything was held, ensuring we were happy before she left. Along with an information pack complimentary tea, coffee, milk and sugar were set out with cups and a lovely box of fudge on the table.

As a camping mad family we have had the luxury of travelling through much of Europe and most of the UK and have seen many different and unique sites. We were pleasantly surprised that the caravan was extremely well kept, well equipped and the beds were all made up. The caravans at Woodovis are a home from home. Cleaning equipment is provided (although you do need to take washing liquid, tea towel and oven glove). The TV has a DVD port so you can take favourite films with you but the channel selection is fantastic. For those who like to have Wi-Fi you can purchase various packages and prices are superbly priced and speeds are good.

On site facilities include a fantastic play park, indoor heated swimming pool with hot tub and sauna (heated by their own solar panel on the roof), small store, laundry and ironing facilities, play room and information points for days out and walks in the area plus activities during the high season. A short walk away is the local pub, The Copper Penny which provides meals and even a takeaway service too. You can order fresh food to be delivered to the site.

Woodovis is ideally situated for exploring with many places of interest to visit to keep families entertained. We took a trip to Morwellham Quay to see how the area lived during the Copper Ore mining era – you can even take a ride into one of the mines and try on the dress from the era! Situated close by is Tavistock which hosts a bustling local market and some divine Cornish Pasties and Plymouth for a day out at the beach.

If you fancy something a little different why not try out The Barn Climbing Centre – just 3 miles from the park. The Barn hosts an indoor climbing wall set at different difficulty degrees and also a Boulder in the middle for those who would like to try Bouldering. No experience is necessary and children over 7 are permitted. You can hire everything that you would need when climbing from The Barn including shoes. Our instructor, Naomi, took us through a brief warm up before explaining the best way to climb the wall, the names of all the equipment we were using and safety procedures. Naomi made the experience fun and rewarding whilst helping us every step of the way.

Whilst we took it in turns to climb the first wall we also had the option of using the automatic belay system to climb on our own. This proved the comedy effect in our family as to get down you literally have to let go and drop…..easier said than done. As someone who is terrified of heights I didn’t manage to let go – but then neither did the rest of the family. The Barn is situated in Milton Abbey and is defintatley worth a visit if you are in the area. More information can be found at http://www.barnclimbingwall.co.uk/

In short it’s easy to see why Woodovis Park has won so many prestigious awards including the AA Campsite of the Year 2014 and tripadvisors Certificate of Excellence 2014. On site facilities are fantastic and the grounds are well kept. The caravans hold everything that you need to make your stay complete, the staff are extremely welcoming. The information pack contains everything you need to know – and has a personalised slant on days out/places to eat making it well worth the read. Whilst there is so much to do in the area the atmosphere is relaxing and calm. We can certainly see why people choose to return to Woodovis and would definitely place the site as one of the best we have visited in Europe and certainly the best in the UK.
