Career Focus - The World of Teaching

School Direct & School Direct (salaried)

With School Direct you get practical, hands-on training and education based in good schools across the country. School Direct courses are designed by groups of schools based on the skills they are looking for in a newly qualified teacher (NQT). The schools recruit you as a trainee onto their School Direct course with a job in mind just for you.

School Direct courses generally last a year and all result in QTS. Many also award you a PGCE and/or Masters-level credits – check individual courses through the UCAS Teacher Training search tool.

School Direct (salaried)

If you have graduated and been working for around three years, School Direct (salaried) is available exclusively for you. You’ll be based at a school, get paid a salary and have your training paid for– and you can expect a job offer when you qualify. The cost of your training to achieve QTS is covered by the school. You should check with the school you are applying to whether this also includes a PGCE.

How long does it take?

Courses generally last for one year full-time.

Is there any financial support available?

Bursaries and scholarships of up to £25,000 are available for trainees on School Direct training courses, who are not employed as unqualified teachers on the School Direct salaried route. Bursary amounts will vary depending on teacher training subject and degree class or highest relevant academic qualification. Click here for more information.

Candidates on School Direct (salaried), are paid whilst training and do not have to pay tuition fees.

How do you apply?

Applications for initial teacher training (ITT) courses are made via a system administered by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS).

If you are ready to make your application, you can do so through UCAS Teacher Training, the new teacher training portal through which you can apply for all postgraduate ITT, including university-led and school-led routes
