Biochemic Tissue Salts

Also known as "Schussler Salts", biochemic tissue salts are homeopathically prepared from mineral sources, such as rock salt and quartz.

In 1873, Dr.Wilhelm Schussler, a German homeopathic doctor, published a paper in which he claimed that many ailments were due to a lack of essential inorganic minerals in the body. To redress these deficiencies, he recommended nutritional supplements consisting of 12 mineral or 'biochemic' tissue salts, to be taken either singly or in combination.

How did you become a Biochemic Tissue Salts practitioner? What is your background?

I have been practicing Holistic Therapies for a good few years now and it all started with Usui Reiki. I had to have major surgery, the thought of which did not enthral me and decided that I needed something to focus my mind to prepare for the surgery. A course of Reiki Treatments prepared me mentally. My lifelong dear friend Ginny used her expertise as an Aromatherapist to prepare the area to be operated on. With the additional use of homoeopathic medication the experience was virtually pain free, eliminating the need for conventional painkillers. Now convinced this was the road to travel, I took my Reiki I Attunement. This was such a lovely experience for me and after practicing it on family, friends and my dogs and cats I was then Attuned to level II. After that it was only natural to progress and I became a Reiki Master.

I studied Biochemic Medicine as a 'homestudy' course from the British School of Yoga and wanted to do more for others and myself and after receiving a treatment of Indian Head Massage from my daughter; I decided that Indian Head Massage would be a very useful tool in treating stress. It also works well with Reiki as they compliment each other very well, so I took two courses in Indian Head Massage.

Hopi EARCandles (Auricular Candle Therapy) was very interesting and became very useful for my little granddaughter who had at the time Glue Ear and is now cured. Auricular Candle Therapy also works well with Reiki.

What exactly does treatment using Biochemic Tissue Salts involve?

The patient comes to me with a problem to be addressed and I assess which Tissue Salt will be able to help them most. I prescribe one, or a combination of salts to be taken and usually use this medicinal therapy in combination with others such as reiki or massage. It is rare that I only treat them with the salts in isolation.

The salts are placed on the tongue to dissolve, as with all homeopathic medicine, they shouldn't be taken with food or drink, or straight after cleaning your teeth or smoking and shouldn't be touched by your hands.

What sort of problems/issues do clients normally have when they come to you for help/therapy?

The Tissue Salts can help just about every condition! They are fantastic for babies who are teething or suffering from Colic. In fact when my daughter had her second baby I had just been trained and prescribed salts to help her little one with teething. They worked fantastically well and she said 'Mum...I wish you'd been trained sooner and could have helped my first baby'.

As with all homeopathic medicine treating a problem with Biochemic medicine is about assessing the patient overall and treating the imbalance in their body that is causing the problem. The Tissue Salts bring the chemical balance back in line.

What/Where was your training? How long did it take overall?

I trained on a 'home study' course with the British School of Yoga. My training was several years ago.

How did training fit round your children?

My children were grown-up by the time I did my training. However, as it is a home based study course I think it would fit very well round having children. I only wish there had been more awareness of alternative medicine and therapies when my children were young as I would have loved to have started working in this field sooner...but it wasn't widely known or publicised at that time.

Roughly, how much did your training cost?

I can't remember - but I do know a current course costs around £195.

Where do you carry out your work?

I work from home, but also offer a remote healing service and sometimes travel to locations such as offices to carry out Indian Head Massage.

Do you need lots of specialist equipment?

To be a Biochemic Tissue Salts practitioner you will only really need the books about treatment to consult when diagosing which salt will work best for a patient. The salts work on their own or in combination and the book will guide you to make your decision. Some practitioners keep a stock of the 12 salts, but I prefer to prescribe the treatment and for my clients to purchase the actual salts themselves. They are available to buy in good chemists and health shops.

How many hours do you work a week?

It varies from week to week.

How does the job fit round your family life?

As my children are grown, my work doesn't affect my family life in any way other than positively - as I can treat them using my therapies! As I mentioned earlier I've been able to help my grandchildren with their teething pains and my granddaughters Glue Ear condition was treated very successfully using Ear Candling.

For a Mum with younger children, I think working as a therapist is fantastic as you set your own hours and can fit work around your commitments rather than being chained to a 9-5 existence.

How do you find clients - do you advertise?

Word of mouth and I have my website - www.aquariushealing.co.uk.

What is the earning potential?

It depends on where you live. I don't only treat patients using Biochemic Medicine, it is part of the therapy that I offer, but you can expect to be able to charge between £20 - £50 depending on where you live.

Do you think it is a job that fits in well with being a Mum?

I think it would be!

Do you think you have to have any special qualities (in terms of personality) to become a Biochemic Tissue Salts practitioner?

You've got to be able to listen and observe people and being able to talk empathetically will help your rapport with clients.

Any advice for a Mum or Dad wanting to start training?
