    My view

    Name: Gemma Olding

    Location: Dorset

    Life: 4 year old daughter

    How often do you work?
I teach 7 sessions a week. This includes both independent classes where I hire the hall myself and also sessions where I go into local nurseries.

How does the job fit around your family life?
This job fits perfectly around my 4 year old. She started school in September and I have time to drop her off to school in the mornings and then am finished by the time I need to pick her up. Before she started school she also used to attend some of my sessions which saved nursery fees and also meant I got to spend more quality time with her!

How much time do you commit?
I have 1 or 2 classes every morning and then tend to spend up to an hour in the afternoon just replying to any emails, updating playlists or focusing on advertising. Again this is very flexible and it may be less, it may be more.

Where do you carry out your work?
My work is based in Dorset where I live. I go into local nurseries around 15mins away and my furthest class is around 20/30mins away by car.

    Do you need a car?
I would say you need a car as I tend to have to drive to more than one location a day and need to carry all props and my speaker with me so it makes life a lot easier!

    Do you get support/training?
You get fantastic support from Claire, the founder of Tappy Toes, and I have found she is more than happy to answer any questions you may have no matter how little or silly they may seem. The training given is made fun and relaxed and the whole process of setting up my business hasn’t been stressful or daunting what so ever.

Would you recommend this opportunity to others?
I would 100% recommend this to other parents. I don’t ever feel like I’m ‘at work’. I have so much fun meeting lovely children and parents and watching the children’s confidence grow week by week; it’s extremely rewarding. I also couldn’t think of a better job to work around my daughter, it really was the best decision I’ve ever made. So a big thank you to Claire.

    Do you advertise?
I tend to use Facebook for my advertising as it seems to be the best way to be seen. One positive with this is you can set a limit on how much you spend as I find adverts in local papers can be pretty expensive.

Are there any downsides to the role?
It’s very hard to think of a downside to running your own Tappy Toes business. The harder the work you put in, the more you get back and it’s very rewarding knowing you’ve done that by yourself!
